- There are a few things that tipped me off.. First if it was the IRS, I did not receive a letter in the mail with a reference number. Second, when I called the number, I heard a room full of people talking on the phones.Third, when I dialed the number, there was no identification of what organization I was calling. When I spoke to a man, he did not identify his self or say the name of the organization. He just asked me if I had a reference number. Then he asked me for my name. Once he asked me for my zip code, I let him know that I did not feel comfortable giving out my personal information without knowing who he was or what organization I was talking with. He just said okay and hung up the phone.
